On October 21-22, 2022, the I International Scientific Conference "Civilizations of the East: View from the 21st century" was held at the Higher School of Economics (HSE). The meeting was dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the HSE, as well as the 20th anniversary of the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs of the HSE.

Welcoming remarks were delivered by: Nikita Anisimov, Rector of the HSE, RIAC Member; Maria Zakharova, Director of the Information and Press Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation; Sergey Karaganov, Academic Supervisor of Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs of the HSE, RIAC Member; Vitaly Naumkin, President of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IOS RAS), RIAC Vice-President; Kirill Babaev, acting Director of the Institute of China and Contemporary Asia of the RAS, RIAC Member.

In the framework of the conference, there was a discussion on the traditional problems of the East, as well as the issues related to the development of the countries of Asia and Africa in the 21st century. In addition, the participants discussed new approaches in research Asian Studies, as well as methodological issues of Oriental studies.

The conference was attended by the RIAC members and experts: Timofey Bordachev, Academic Supervisor of the Centre for Comprehensive European and International Studies (CCEIS) of the HSE, RIAC Member; Alexey Maslov, Director of the Institute of Asian and African Studies of Lomonosov Moscow State University (IAAS LMSU), RIAC member; Vasily Kuznetsov, Head of the Center for Arab and Islamic Studies (CAIS) of the IOS RAS, RIAC Member; Sergey Luzyanin, Professor of Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs of the HSE, RIAC Member; Andrey Karneev, Head of the School of Asian Studies of the HSE; Guan Guihai, Executive Vice President of the Institute of International and Strategic Studies of Peking University; Igor Makarov, Head of the School of World Economy of the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs of the HSE; Aleksey Kupriyanov, Head of the Group on South Asia and Indian Ocean of the IMEMO RAS; Vyacheslav Belokrenitsky, Head of the Center for Middle East Studies of the IOS RAS; Alexander Lukin, Director of the Center for East Asian and Shanghai Cooperation Organization Studies of MGIMO University; Anastasia Pyatachkova, Deputy Head of the CCEIS Asia-Pacific Department at the HSE; Grigory Lukyanov, Deputy Head of Joint Department of the HSE with the Institute of Oriental Studies of the RAS; Alexey Kuznetsov, Professor of the Department of World Economy and World Finance of the Financial University; Elena Melkumyan, Leading Researcher at the CAIS of the IOS RAS; Omar Nessar, Senior Researcher at the Center for Middle East Studies of the IOS RAS; Dmitry Zhantiev, Associate Professor of IAAS LMSU; Pavel Shlykov, Associate Professor of IAAS LMSU; Boris Volkhonsky, Associate Professor of IAAS LMSU; Andrey Chuprygin, Senior Lecturer of the School of Asian Studies of the HSE; Valery Matrosov, Senior Lecturer of the School of Asian Studies of the HSE. Program Coordinator at the Ivan Bocharov also participated in the conference.

Along with representatives of the leading Russian research centers, the meeting was also attended by the experts from Turkey, Lebanon, Palestine, Iran, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, China, Mongolia, Japan, the USA and UK.

Following the conference, the reports will be published in a special academic publication.
