On December 2, 2020, the Institute for Africa of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) held the conference "Prospects for the processes of destabilization in the Middle East and North Africa: before and after the pandemic". The purpose of the conference was to discuss and develop mechanisms to prevent and overcome instability caused by various factors. Dr Sc, Leading Research Fellow of the Center for Civilizational and Regional Studies of the Institute for African Studies of RAS Andrey Korotayev addressed the conference participants with a welcoming speech.

The topic of the conference was determined particularly by the strengthening of the role of the religious factor in the emergence and development of conflict situations in the countries of the Middle East and North Africa. During the event, a wide range of issues related to the main factors of destabilization and stabilization in the countries of the Middle East and North Africa were discussed. The conference participants discussed possible scenarios of destabilization processes in the region, as well as the impact on them by the COVID-19 pandemic.
