On December 5–7, 2019, the Fifth International Conference on Security and Development Issues in Mediterranean Region (MED2019) was held in Rome. The topic of the conference was stated as Beyond Turmoil, A Positive Agenda.

The conference speakers included: Sergey Lavrov, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia, who spoke at the conference at Dialogue session; Andrey Kortunov, RIAC Director General, who spoke at the sessions “Syria: Finding The Way Out” on December 6 and “Saving The Peace: State And Nation Building In Iraq” on December 7. MED2019 was also attended by Aleksandr Dynkin, RIAC Member, President of IMEMO, RAS Full Member; Alexander Grushko, RIAC Member, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia; Sergey Razov, RIAC Member, Ambassador of the Russian Federation in the Italian Republic; Maxim Suchkov, RIAC Expert, Senior Fellow, Department of Applied Analysis of International Problems at MGIMO MFA, and other representatives of Russian MFA and the Embassy of Russia in Italy.


On December 5–7, 2019, the Fifth International Conference on Security and Development Issues in Mediterranean Region (MED2019) was held in Rome. The topic of the conference was stated as Beyond Turmoil, A Positive Agenda.

The conference has been held since 2015 by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in cooperation with the Italian Institute for International Political Studies (ISPI) and has already become one of the most significant and representative public-political and expert international forums. MED2019 gathered over fifty heads of state, ministers of foreign affairs of the countries of the region, and heads of international organizations, about a thousand diplomats, businessmen, public figures, and experts representing more than eighty national and international analytical centers. In total, the conference was attended by representatives from more than fifty countries.

Russian International Affairs Council has been one of MED institutional partners since late 2017. On September 10, 2019, Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC), in cooperation with the Italian Institute for International Political Studies (ISPI), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Italy, held an international seminar “From Battlefields to Negotiation tables. What Role for International Actors in MENA Crises.” On September 18, 2018, a similar seminar was held focusing on the topic “Syria, Libya and Yemen: the MENA Crises' Outcome”.
