On November 1­–3, 2019, in Beijing, Peking University together with the Beijing Municipal Commission of Education, and Korea Foundation for Advanced Studies co-hosted the 16th Beijing Forum. The Beijing Forum is one of the most representative academic evens for scientists and professors of humanities and social sciences involved in studying the problems of Asia-Pacific region. Unlike other major Chinese forums, such as World Peace Forum, held at Tsinghua University, Beijing, and the Shanghai Forum, organized at Fudan University, the Beijing Forum, in addition to applied problems, pays great attention to theoretical and methodological problems of a wide range of social and humanitarian sciences.

This year, the general theme of the Forum was defined as “The Harmony of Civilizations and Prosperity for All: the Changing World and the Future of Humankind”. About four hundred scientists from leading international research centers, universities, the media, and public organizations took part in the discussions. The forum participants discussed the evolution of statehood in various historical models of civilization, the importance of language, culture, and identity in cross-civilizational communication, the changing world economic and political order, the features of the modern Chinese model of socio-economic development, the new role of science and technology in social development, etc.

Andrey Kortunov, RIAC Director General, took part in the Forum and made a report on the changing perceptions of globalization processes in the modern world at the session on the new world order. He also held consultations with the authorities of the School of International Studies, Peking University (PKU) and the Center for International and Strategic Studies, Peking University, on further development of cooperation between RIAC and Peking University.
