On November 6-7, 2014 in Tokyo, RIAC and the Tokyo Foundation held international conference "Russian-Japanese Strategic Dialogue." The agenda contained issues Russia-U.S.A.-China relationship in the Ukraine context and Korean Peninsula with relevant impacts on Russia-Japan relations, the focus being on their development after settling the Ukraine crisis and possible areas for security and economic cooperation.

Lead by Diplomacy Chair at MGIMO-University Ambassador Alexander Panov, the Russian team included Head of Oriental Studies Chair at MGIMO-University Dmitry Streltsov, Ambassador Valery Sukhinin, Deputy Director of MSU Institute for Asian and African Studies Andrey Karneyev, MGIMO-University Professor Sergey Chugrov, Guest Researcher of Hosai University and Honorable Professor of Yamanashi University Konstantin Sarkisov, and RIAC Program Director Lyudmila Filippova,
The Japanese side was represented by Tokyo Foundation President Masahiro Akiyama, JBIC Senior Managing Director Tadashi Maeda, Director of Institute for International Economic Research Tomoki Nishitani, Professor of Japan National Defense Academy Lt. General (Ret.) Noboru Yamaguchi, Hosei University Professor Nobuo Shimotomai, other key experts and businesspersons engaged in Russia-Japan interaction.
The agenda contained issues Russia-U.S.A.-China relationship in the Ukraine context and Korean Peninsula with relevant impacts on Russia-Japan relations, the focus being on their development after settling the Ukraine crisis and possible areas for security and economic cooperation.
The participants reiterated that despite differences on Ukraine and Japanese participation in anti-Russian sanctions, the two countries maintain a constructive and confidence-based dialogue, as well as willingness to go ahead with economic deals.
The discussion outcomes are meant to be formulated in a joint RIAC-Tokyo Foundation memorandum on key bilateral issues.
