On December 4, 2014, the Russian International Affairs Council and Crisis Management Initiative headed by Marti Ahtisaari held the roundtable “Russia and the EU: in Search for Ways for Cooperation within Common Neighborhood on the Example of Moldova and Transnistria.”

The attendees discussed the political and economic aspects of the Russia-EU-Moldova-Transnistria dialogue with the focus on Transnistria settlement and the impact of the November 30 parliamentary elections in Moldova on its relations with Moscow, Brussels and Tiraspol.

Opened by RIAC Program Director Ivan Timofeev and CMI Program Director Ville Brummer, the event featured reports by Dmitry Danilov, Head of European Security Department at RAS Institute for European Studies; Tatiana Laryushina, former Moldova president’s economic advisor and Senior Economist at Viitorul Institute for Development and Social Initiatives; Yuri Ganin, Vice-President of Transnistria Chamber of Commerce and Industry; and Nicu Popescu, Senior Analyst at European Union Institute for Security Studies.

The speakers stressed that the Ukraine events have significantly changed the perception and role of the Moldova-Transnistria conundrum in the policies of the interested parties, as the conflict is increasingly seen in the context of the competing Eurasian and European integration models.

The ensuing discussion was supported by Sergey Kulik, Director for International Development at the Institute of Contemporary Development; Vladimir Olenchenko, Senior Research Fellow of the European Union Studies Sector at RAS Institute of World Economy and International Relations; Alla Yazykova, Head of the Mediterranean and Black Sea Department at RAS Institute for European Studies; Yuri Cheban, Vice-President of Transnistria Union of Industrialists, Agrarians and Entrepreneurs; Kornel Churja, Head of Competitive Society Department at Viitorul; and Galina Shelar, Executive Director of Moldovan Centre for Strategic Studies and Reforms.
