On May 12th 2017, the Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC) held a roundtable discussion on the development of world energy at the business center "Alexander House". Within the framework of this event, experts have presented the book “Global Energy 2015–2016”, written by the ISL Energy`s team and international experts, including RIAC experts.

As Stephan Roh (President and CEO of ISL Energy) stated that the book reflects important changes that happened in the energy field in 2015-2016. He pointed out that the book could be considered as a strong basis, not only to analyze the energy sector but also the external factors that influence energy. “Global Energy 2015–2016” touches upon issues of development in world fuel and energy complex as well as renewable energy sources and analyzes the prospects for pipelines construction. A book chapter dedicated to Russia and its oil and gas sector was written by Ivan Timofeev, RIAC Director of Programs.

Participants of the roundtable discussed key challenges of global security as well as related topics to energy such as security (including energy security), migration, climate change, financial crisis and China. More particularly, Stephan Roh (President and CEO of ISL energy), emphasized that the Chinese project, One Road One Belt, poses a potential issue to energy. Experts wondered how the infrastructure of OBOR would influence international and energy affairs and implied that the Chinese initiative remains unspecified yet and creates confusion for the Western countries. Experts agreed that the Chinese project and its correlation to global energy would be deeply analyzed in the next edition.

Joseph Misfud (Director of the London Academy of Diplomacy) confirmed that the book adapted to current global trends and highly insisted on the fact that a large diversity of issues directly impact energy fields. Indeed, he emphasized on the effect of migration and climate change on the energy sector.

Joseph Misfud has imparted that the book is a pre-Trump, pre-French elections project but has been written in a post-Brexit context. The upcoming changes for energy sector will be analyzed in the next edition with OBOR.

Vladimir Likhachev (Deputy Director of the Institute for Energy Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Deputy Director of the Energy Institute of the Higher School of Economics, RIAC expert and leading expert on energy issues) explained that it is complicated to forecast the energy future. Main drivers for energy market development are changeable variables such as economic growth or new technologies, but the growth of renewable energy remains a certain fact to take into account.

Finally, RIAC Director of Programs Ivan Timofeev said that the book represents a unique project reflecting the expertise of an international team and this cooperation will surely continue. Experts agreed to say that the book project is a strong basis for energy experts as well as politicians. It helps to understand goals for the future and ways to provide measures in order to reach them.
