On October 20, 2016 Moscow hosted a meeting of RIAC members with an American Working Group delegation, established by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, to draw up recommendations on shaping the American foreign policy towards Russia, Ukraine and Eurasia as a whole.
The American delegation was composed of John McLaughlin, former Deputy Director of the CIA; Meghan O'Sullivan, former Deputy National Security Advisor on Iraq and Afghanistan; Andrew Weiss, Vice-President for Studies at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace; and Eugene Rumer, Director and Senior Associate of Carnegie’s Russia and Eurasia Program. The Russian side was represented by Academician Alexey Arbatov, Head of the Center for International Security of the Institute of World Economy and International Relations (IMEMO RAN) and RIAC member; RIAC Director General Andrey Kortunov; Dmitry Trenin, Director of the Carnegie Moscow Center; Pavel Demidov, expert of the Center for Strategic Research and Senior Lecturer at MGIMO-University; and journalist Gleb Pavlovsky.
The participants discussed the current state of Russian-American relations, the risks associated with further escalation of tension, possible initiatives to give positive momentum to relations between the two countries when the current election cycle in the United States is over.
