On June 17, 2015 the Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC) and the Valdai International Discussion Club will hold a seminar “Global Alternatives to Left-Wing Forces in the 21st Century: Marxism and Other Ideologies”. The meeting will be broadcast online.

The last two calendar years have been marked by a significant increase in left-wing protest movements, both within the European Union and around the world. The most notable of these has been the rise of the Coalition of the Radical Left (or SYRIZA) to power in Greece. It is high time for us analyse the ideological base of new protest parties, how they fit in with – and even go beyond – traditional left-wing Marxism.

Another aspect is how to reconcile the protest mentality with the alternative economic strategy proposed by such parties and how such a scenario plays out in the case of the SYRIZA coalition. The seminar represents the first results of the Valdai Discussion Club’s Global Alternatives programme initiated at the beginning of 2015.

The event will be broadcast on YouTube and the RIAC and Valdai Discussion Club websites from 5pm on June 17, 2015.
