On September 28, 2020, the Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC) in cooperation with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) held an online round table titled “SCO and Regional Governance: New Ideas and Approaches”. Igor Ivanov, RIAC President, Zhang Hanhui, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of China to Russia, Andrey Denisov, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Russia to China, and Vladimir Norov, SCO Secretary General, delivered welcoming remarks at the meeting. Video address by Xie Fuzhan, CASS President, was also included in the Opening session.

Russian and Chinese experts discussed Russia’s presidency in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, Moscow’s and Beijing’s approaches to the SCO, the Organization’s contribution to the fight against traditional and non-traditional security challenges as well as emerging priority areas of the SCO’s activities. Special attention was given to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the grouping and to the member states’ joint efforts to tackle the virus and other threats that have been exacerbated against its background.

Zhang Yuling, Member of the CASS Scientific Council, Mikhail Konarovsky, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Russia, Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of International Research at MGIMO University, RIAC Member, Yang Yi, General Secretary of the China Institute of International Studies, Alexey Maslov, Acting Director of the RAS Institute of Far Eastern Studies, Yuan Peng, President of the China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations, as well as Vasily Kashin, Head of the CCEIS Section of International Military-Political and Military-Economic Problems at the Higher School of Economics, RIAC Member, spoke at the roundtable. Ivan Timofeev, RIAC Director of Programs, moderated the discussion.

Sun Zhuangzhi, Director of the CASS Institute of Russian, Eastern European and Central Asian Studies, and Ivan Timofeev delivered closing remarks at the meeting.
