On June 28, 2021, Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC), with the Middle East Directions Programme (MEDirections) of the European University Institute in Florence (EUI), held a joint expert webinar "A Gradual Approach Towards a New Security System in the Persian Gulf."

Andrey Kortunov, Director General, Russian International Affairs Council, and Luigi Narbone, Director of the Middle East Direction Programme, delivered opening remarks.

The meeting was moderated by Ruslan Mamedov, MENA Program Manager, Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC)

The expert discussion focused on the causes for previous failures to build a regional security, ways to facilitate talks in post-JCPOA era, changes and role of Russian policy in the Persian Gulf, Biden administration policies and its influence on Saudi-Iranian talks. Impacts of Iran’s presidential elections on regional talks. The experts noted the need for a consistent approach: moving from relatively small, technical methods of ensuring regional security to more comprehensive and complex ones, which could develop into a system of collective security in the Persian Gulf in the future.
