On May 31, 2021, Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC), in partnership with the Embassy of Portugal and the Delegation of the European Union to Russia, held the

Tenth Meeting in the “EU-Russia” Series by RIAC and the of the Chair Countries of the Council of the European Union. The event was held in a mixed format.

Sergey Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister, Augusto Santos Silva, Portuguese Foreign Minister, and Igor Ivanov, RIAC President, made opening remarks.

Tenth Meeting in the “EU-Russia” Series by RIAC and the Chair Countries of the Council of the European Union. The event was held in a mixed format.

Sergey Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister, Augusto Santos Silva, Portuguese Foreign Minister, and Igor Ivanov, RIAC President, made opening remarks.

Russia was represented at the workshop by: Anatoly Chubais, Special Presidential Representative for Relations with International Organizations to Achieve Sustainable Development Goals; Alexei Gromyko, Director of RAS Institute of Europe, RIAC Member; Vladimir Chizhov, Permanent Representative of Russia to the European Union, RIAC Member; Ruslan Edelgeriyev, Advisor to the President of the Russian Federation; Special Presidential Representative on Climate Issues; and Igor Makarov, Head of the Department of World Economy, Head of the Laboratory for Economics of Climate Change at Higher School of Economics, RIAC expert.

EU was represented by: Markus Ederer, Ambassador of the European Union to the Russian Federation; Sandra Dias Fernandes, Associate Research Fellow, Professor at the Research Centre in Political Science (CICP) at the University of Minho; Luc Pierre Devigne, Deputy Managing Director for Russia, Eastern partnership, Europe, Central Asia, and OSCE at European External Action Service; Clara De La Torre, Deputy Director General, Climate Action Department, European Commission; and Alexandre Leitao, Portugal's Special Envoy for Climate.

The following issues were discussed during the workshop: Portugal’s key policy areas during the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, assessment of the state of relations between Russia and the EU and the prospects for their development, possible consequences for bilateral relations in connection with the implementation of the European Green Deal by Brussels.

The meeting was moderated by Andrey Kortunov, RIAC General Director, and Ivan Timofeev, RIAC Director of Programs. Natalya Vyakhireva, RIAC Program Manager, Yulia Timofeeva and Milan Lazovich, RIAC Program Assistants, Polina Mukhonkina, Program Assistant at the Russian International Affairs Council, also took part in the event.
