On March 22, 2022, the conference “The China Factor in the Mediterranean” was held at the Institute of Europe of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS). The event was timed to coincide with the publication of the collective monograph “The China Factor in the Mediterranean” in a series of books “Reports of the Institute of Europe RAS”.

During the meeting, the participants discussed a wide range of issues related to the role of the PRC in the region. In particular, experts discussed the Chinese investment expansion in the Mediterranean, the creation of transport and logistics corridors as part of economic projects of China, as well as China's political interaction with the countries of the EU, the Middle East and North Africa.

The participants of the conference were welcomed by Alexey Gromyko, Director of the Institute of Europe of the RAS, Corresponding Member of the RAS, RIAC Member, and Olga Butorina, Deputy Director of the Institute of Europe of the RAS, Corresponding Member of the RAS, RIAC Member. A moderator of the discussion was Elena Alekseenkova, Head of the Center for Italian Studies at the Institute of Europe of the RAS.

From the side of the RIAC, the conference was also attended by: Vasily Kashin, Director of the Center for Comprehensive European and International Studies of the Higher School of Economics, RIAC Member; Alexander Lukin, Director of the Center for East Asian and SCO Studies at MGIMO University; Ekaterina Entina, Head of the Department of Black and Mediterranean Sea Region Studies of the Institute of Europe of the RAS; Elena Maslova, Senior Researcher at the Institute of Europe of the RAS; Ivan Bocharov, Program Assistant at the RIAC.
