On June 17, 2014, RIAC held an invitations-only roundtable on Central Asia in view of the Western coalition withdrawal from Afghanistan and prospects for Russia-U.S. cooperation in the region.
The participants focused on the situation in Afghanistan, key security risks related to the U.S. and NATO troops withdrawal, and the role of CSTO in maintaining regional security. Some attention was attached to the impact of Ukraine crisis on relations between Moscow and Washington, the specifics of Russian, American and Chinese presence in the area, key interests and contradictions of the parties and opportunities for their alleviation, as well as drivers able to step up the multilateral dialogue for settling Central Asian problems.

The event was attended by ambassadors of Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan, officials from Tajikistan and Turkmenistan embassies, department heads of Russian Foreign Ministry, representatives of Rossotrudnichestvo, Union State of Russia and Belarus, CIS Executive Committee, Russian Security Council, Federal Assembly, CSTO, Federal Migration Service and businesses, as well as RIAC members and Central Asia experts.
