Communications engineer by education.

Worked in the USSR Ministry of Defense, then in the main information editorial team of the Central Radio Service for Outbound Broadcasting of the USSR State Committee on Television and Radio.

In 1989, founded the first independent information agency, Interfax, which he continues to head.

From August 1997 to December 1998, was Deputy Chief of the Presidential Administration of Russia.
