10th International Student/Young Pugwash (ISYP) Conference: Call for applications

The conference aims to gather participants from diverse disciplinary backgrounds, including science and technology and social sciences, who are developing the expertise necessary to understand and analyze key areas of international security. The ISYP Executive Board and the organizers of the 10th ISYP Conference invite students and young professionals to submit applications to participate in this event. Both members and non-members of the ISYP network are invited to apply.
Applicants are required to submit a paper abstract (and subsequently a paper in advance of the conference) that addresses a topic in at least one of the four areas below.
The conference will address the following issues:
1. Nuclear arms control, non-proliferation and disarmament
The arms control and disarmament agenda of the world’s nuclear powers and the role of non-nuclear weapon states; the nuclear ban treaty; issues relating to the status of the NPT and the challenges of the current nuclear order; nuclear weapons free zones and regional arms control debates; and the technical and societal challenges of arms control in all areas including technical and political verification.
2. Nuclear inheritance: Kazakhstan and Models for Disarmament
The legacy of nuclear inheritance and lessons to be learned from different country cases to strengthen efforts on disarmament and non-proliferation technical challenges and solutions to promote cooperation and transparency.
3. Emerging technologies and security threats
Cyber warfare and cyber security; climate change, natural resources and energy security; geo-engineering; non-nuclear technologies that challenge traditional understandings of nuclear and strategic security issues; the social responsibility of scientists developing new technologies; issues concerning non-state actors and extremism/fundamentalism; and a variety of other areas of international security such as drones and proxy wars.
4. Regional and International Conflicts and Prospects for Cooperation
Conflicts at national, regional or international level that threaten global security. Any study of cases of conflicts and prospects for cooperation in regions such as but not limited to the Middle East, Central Asia, South Asia, East Asia, and East Europe.
