Ivan Timofeev

Doctor of Political Science, Director General of the Russian International Affairs Council, RIAC member

When the number of U.S. and European sanctions imposed on Russia surpassed 30,000, an interesting paradox emerged: sanctions had not defeated Russia, yet experts who studied sanctions themselves became targets of sanctions imposed by the European Union and Canada.

Ivan Timofeev, Director General of the Russian International Affairs Council and a leading scholar in sanctions research, was placed on the EU sanctions list simply because he reached the academic conclusion that "the Russian economy can adapt to sanctions."

Ironically, sanctions do not appear to have had a significant impact on his personal or professional life. In his own words, they have only made him "more famous."

In this episode of Guancha's Opening Ideas, the program travels to Moscow for an exclusive interview with Ivan Timofeev, offering an in-depth analysis of the resilience of the Russian economy under Western sanctions, the vacuum left in the Russian market following the withdrawal of Western brands, the delicate dynamics of the China-U.S.-Russia triangle, and the continuing evolution of the situation in the Middle East.
