This working paper examines the strategies pursued by South Africa, Ethiopia, and Egypt in engaging with BRICS. Despite their diverse national contexts, all three countries view BRICS membership as a means of strengthening their international agency and promoting more equitable socio-economic development. Using the African cases as a lens, the paper identifies the main drivers of BRICS enlargement and assesses both the opportunities and the challenges associated with the bloc's growing African dimension.
