Statement by the President of the Russian International Affairs Council,
Igor Ivanov
The Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC) expresses its deep satisfaction with the outcome of the meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Barack Obama, held on June 18 in Los Cabos (Mexico).
Andrey Kortunov: The Magnitsky case is a subject of internal political haggling between Democrats and Republicans
The Director General of the Russian International Affairs Council explained to the Voice of Russia what role the Magnitsky case was playing in Russian-American relations.
China's energy strategy
A. Mahin
The Chinese economy is the second largest (after the USA) in terms of aggregate GDP, and is the fastest growing major economy in the world. China (along with the USA) is the biggest world consumer of energy resources (in 2010 - it consumed more than 2.3 billion tons of oil equivalent per year), which is of particular interest to the Russian economy. [...]
[...] In the broader market supply of energy resources, China has the ability to vary its business partners in the supply of not only gas, but other hydrocarbons.

"Green" technologies in the global economy N. Piskulova
The main hope in solving the most pressing environmental problems (and also resource problems) is imposed today on technological breakthroughs. In recent years, developed countries are reorienting their development strategies for the implementation of environmentally-oriented growth, one of the main components of which is "green" technology. Developing economies are becoming more and more involved in these processes. [...]
[...] In the initial stages development of "green" technologies can be quite expensive, but in the future, studies show that "greening" can provide not only an increase in natural capital, but also a higher level of GDP.
A Palestinian State - what is behind the facade? A. Vysotsky
In 2011, Palestine applied for a full membership in the United Nations. Broad international support for this move forced the USA to proclaim its determination to veto this move in the Security Council. Meanwhile, the impasse in the Palestinian-Israeli dialogue, and the still fragile peace between Fatah and Hamas, promise no quick progress either in Palestine's entry into the UN, or in the real state building of houses in the occupied territories.
China is conquering Africa T. Deych
In the last decade, we have witnessed China's unprecedented activities in Africa. China is successfully squeezing old players in the African markets, it is leading among the new players, which gain powers in the continent, in particular, the BRICS countries. What drives China to strengthen its efforts on the continent? What does Africa gain from Chinese policy and what in that policy Africans are not satisfied with?
Egypt's Arab Spring chooses who? A. Sarabiev
The campaign to choose Egypt's new president took place under very different conditions both domestically and in the region. Islamists have come to power in some Arab countries enveloped in a wave of protests. Representatives of the Muslim Brotherhood and the Salafists occupy most seats in the Egyptian parliament. This new uneasy alarm has been acquired by anti-Israel rhetoric. However, Islamist politicians are not exclusively leading in the presidential race: experienced secular politicians and even those from the previous administration are confidently along in the forefront with the Islamist politicians.
The potential of regional separatism in Spain S. Khenkin
Spain is an example of a multinational state, where the influential forces in some areas "encroach" on state sovereignty, claiming sovereign status of their territories. At the forefront of the struggle for sovereignty in Spain are representatives of the most advanced autonomous regions - the Basque Country and Catalonia, making demands of political, cultural and linguistic characters. Regional separatism in the past decade manifested itself in two main forms - a terrorist armed struggle and civil, often massive claims for independence. How great a threat of the territorial integrity of the Spanish state today?
Water, water everywhere A. Zulkharneev
Aggravation of the water and energy problem (WEP) in Central Asia in the 1990s-2000s is the result of the transition from one energy and water exchange system, created in the Soviet time under the control from Moscow, to new relations in this sector. Moreover, these relations are formed spontaneously, depending on the current economic or political circumstances, without any common and generally recognized concept of the future architecture of the water-energy system of the region.
U.S. military presence in Asia-Pacific region A. Sushentsov
The priority objective for the United States is to prevent a review of the existing order in Asia-Pacific region (APR). Americans plan to do this by engaging China in a system of Pacific relations. The United States is in contemplation to use different stimuli in order to obtain China's consent to the role assigned to it. However, will this process be smooth and without conflict?
The future political map of East Asia E. Kanaev
One hundred years ago, most East Asian countries were at best able to relatively and successfully adapt their interests to the policies of their Western colonial powers. At the present stage of world history, eastern Asians are not so much adapting to global political and economic processes, as they form them the rather actively, and if current trends continue, East Asian countries will very likely determine such processes at the beginning of the next century.
Eurasian Union and Migration O. Troitskaya
The CIS countries' joining the Eurasian Union will lead to changes in the migration management principles in the region and increase the number of legal migrants to Russia. This will result in considerable advantages for employers and foreign workers, while also increase the risks of social destabilization. What will be the consequences of such scenario for the Russian labor market and society?
Ideas of RIAC winter school on migration are materializing into specific projects
Ural State Mining University in Yekaterinburg on April 26, 2012 hosted a round table entitled Russian Language as a Path to Russia. During the event, a new structural unit of the University - Centre for Testing of Russian as a Foreign Language - was opened. The first Russian language testing of foreign nationals, wishing to acquire Russian citizenship, was held on June 7. The first 11 candidates have successfully passed the exams and after some time will receive a state-recognized certificate.
Alexey Nikolaevich Starostin (Ph.D.) is the director of the Center and author of the idea of its creation. He is the deputy head of the Department of Theology, Ural State Mining University, and a journalist for many years, specializing on the issues of Islam in Russia and Central Asia, as well as issues of migration. He was lucky to take part in the first RIAC winter school "Migration in a Globalized World" largely thanks to which this Centre was created.
The G-20 Summit in Los Cabos S. Stoyanov
Depending on the outcome of the elections in Greece (the elections may determine whether the country will remain in the euro zone, or leave it with the likelihood of a domino effect), the G-20 leaders may have to assume the role of a fire brigade and urgently develop a new rescue plan for the euro zone.
