On November 22, 2018, within the framework of the visit of Russian international experts to the Republic of Korea, organized by the Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC) and Korea Foundation, a meeting was held with the leadership of the Office of Korean Peninsula Peace and Security Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea. Korean diplomats spoke about the development of inter-Korean relations in 2018 and explained the official position of the state on peacemaking on the Korean Peninsula.

On November 22, RIAC, Hanyang University, and Korea Foundation held a round table on cooperation between Russia and South Korea within regional and bilateral agenda. Gleb Ivashentsov, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation, RIAC Vice-President, and Gu Ho Eom, Director of Asia-Pacific Research Center at Hanyang University, made opening remarks.

Within the first session of the event “Prospects for Russia-South Korea Cooperation in the Context of Regional and Global Dynamics”, experts from the two countries discussed the positions of Moscow and Seoul regarding large-scale multilateral initiatives in Eurasia and prospects for creating a multilateral security system in Northeast Asia, as well as the U.S. factor in relations between Russia and the Republic of Korea. The speakers included: Anna Kireeva, Associate Professor at MGIMO University; Woo Jung-Yeop, Research Fellow, The Sejong Institute; Roman Lobov, RISS Expert; Jang Se Ho, Research Fellow, Institute for National Security Strategy. Beom-Shik Shin, Professor at Seoul National University, moderated the session.

The second session focused on the current state of bilateral relations between Russia and the Republic of Korea and the prospects for the development of cooperation. Special attention was paid to the issues of trade and economic cooperation between the two countries and to the participation of Korean companies in projects in the Russian Far East. The reports were made by Pavel Leshakov, Associate Professor at Lomonosov Moscow State University; Gu Ho Eom, Director, Asia-Pacific Research Center at Hanyang University; Liudmila Zakharova, Senior Research Fellow at Institute of Far Eastern Studies of RAS; Boram Shin, HK Research Professor, APRC at Hanyang University; and Anna Kireeva, Associate Professor at MGIMO University. The discussion was moderated by Gleb Ivashentsov, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation, RIAC Vice-President.

During the debriefing session, RIAC and Asia-Pacific Research Center at Hanyang University confirmed their interest in continuing cooperation.
