On October 31, 2016, 5th Conference of China-Russia Arctic Workshop took place in Quingdao (PRC). The event was organized by Ocean University of China. The participants of the conference discussed Russia and China strategies in the Arctic region; the main areas and challenges in cooperation of the two countries in the Far North; the perspectives of Beijing participation in the Russia’s Arctic area development, Arctic resources development, and the Northern Sea Route navigation.

On October 31, 2016, 5th Conference of China-Russia Arctic Workshop took place in Quingdao (PRC). The event was organized by Ocean University of China.

The participants of the conference discussed Russia and China strategies in the Arctic region; the main areas and challenges in cooperation of the two countries in the Far North; the perspectives of Beijing participation in the Russia’s Arctic area development, Arctic resources development, and the Northern Sea Route navigation. The experts also focused on the international legal regulations of cooperation in the Arctic and the influence of current geopolitical situation on the cooperation in the region. The agenda also included multilateral cooperation in the Arctic issues.

The welcoming speech was made by Dr. Chen Rui, Vice-President, Ocean University of China (OUC). Russian delegation was represented by Marina Kalinina, Vice-Rector for International Cooperation, Northern (Arctic) Federal University, Nadezhda Kharlampieva, Associate Professor, Saint Petersburg State University, Lyudmila Filippova, RIAC Program Manager for the Arctic and Asia-Pacific, Mikhail Anokhin, Third Secretary, Russian Embassy to PRC. The Chinese speakers included Chen Danhong, Director, International Cooperation Division, Arctic and Antarctic Administration of PRC; Liu Changming, Dean, School of Political Science and Public Administration, Shandong University; Liu Huirong, Dean, School of Law and Political Science, Ocean University of China; Guo Peiqing, Executive Director, Institute for Ocean Politics Studies, Ocean University of China, as well as other staff and experts from Polar Research Institute of China, Shanghai Institute for International Studies, Beijing University, Xiamen University, Wuhan University, and other.

Conference of China-Russia Arctic Workshop has been an annual event since 2012. In 2017 the event will be hosted in Russia.
