Graduated from the Maurice Thorez Moscow State Pedagogical Institute of Foreign Languages (now Moscow State Linguistic University MSLU). Member of the Russian Academy of Education, Doctor of Sciences (Pedagogy), professor.

Career at MSLU: lecturer, senior lecturer, head of the German Language Department of the Translation and Interpreting Faculty, Vice-Rector on educational issues. Since 1986, Rector of the Moscow State Linguistic University.

Chairperson of the Curricula and Methodology of Linguistic Education Association of Russian Universities. Coordinator for the Russian Federation at the Language Policy Unit of the Council of Europe.

Author of over 100 scientific works on methods of teaching foreign languages and translation, as well as on general linguistics and German studies.

Recipient of state and international awards.
