Russia’s current policy in the post-Soviet space is a key part of its global strategy. The positioning of Russia in the international arena and the emergence of new rules for the world order that are seen as a precondition for the stable development of the country depend on the implementation of foreign policy goals in Russia’s immediate geographical surroundings. Successful completion of the integration project is thought to be an indispensable condition for creating an independent and self-sufficient centre in the global economy, hence the basis for the emergence of a real, undeclared poly-centricity of the global political system.

The Report is prepared by the Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC) in partnership with the Institute for Iran-Eurasia Studies (IRAS) as part of the project “Russia-Iran Relations on the Modern Stage”. The goal of the publication is to present the views of Russian and Iranian experts on the main areas of RussiaIran cooperation, to reveal the commonality and differences in their approaches to common threats and challenges. The Report discusses Russian and Iranian vision of global governance and role of great powers, cooperation in the Middle East region, Central Asia and Afghanistan, trade and economic relations, common transport projects and interaction in international organizations such as SCO, EAEU, SREB initiative etc.

On February 28, 2017, the Council for Strategic Interaction between Russia and China officially started its work. The Council is established in the framework of Chinese Academy of Social Studies (CASS). It will become a think tank of a new type and will promote the bilateral and multilateral discussion of Russia-China cooperation in the format of the second track events.

On February, 9 2017, the Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC) held the press-conference in the media centre of Rossiya Segodnya news agency, dedicated to the main trends and the prospects for the development of the post-Soviet space. The event was timed for the 25th anniversary of the Soviet Union dissolution and the formation of new independent states on its territory.

On November 14-16 Astana hosted the second meeting of Astana Club, an international discussion platform, organized by the Foundation of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan – the Leader of the Nation. The event brought together political analysts, diplomats, economists, and social activists from over 20 countries, who discussed a number of Eurasian and global development issues.
