Science Diplomacy and Its Contribution to the International Cooperation in the Arctic Discussed at RIAC

On March 21, 2017 Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC) hosted an expert discussion “Science Diplomacy: US-Russia Cooperation in the Arctic”. Paul Berkman, Coordinator of Arctic Options and Pan-Arctic Options, Professor of Practice in Science Diplomacy of Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, Director of US-Russia Relations Project supported by the Carnegie Corporation, was the keynote speaker of the event. Leading experts on international cooperation in the Arctic took part in the event.

On March 21, 2017 at 12:00 Russian International Affairs Council will host an expert discussion titled “Science Diplomacy: US-Russia Cooperation in the Arctic”. Paul Berkman, Coordinator, Arctic Options and Pan-Arctic Options; Professor of Practice in Science Diplomacy, Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University; Director, US-Russia Relations Project, Carnegie Corporation, will deliver the key speech at the event. Leading Russian experts on international cooperation in the Arctic will take part in the discussion.

Russian and Chinese Experts Discussed Cooperation in the Arctic

On October 31, 2016, 5th Conference of China-Russia Arctic Workshop took place in Quingdao (PRC). The event was organized by Ocean University of China. The participants of the conference discussed Russia and China strategies in the Arctic region; the main areas and challenges in cooperation of the two countries in the Far North; the perspectives of Beijing participation in the Russia’s Arctic area development, Arctic resources development, and the Northern Sea Route navigation.

The “International Cooperation in the Arctic: New Challenges and Vectors of Development” conference organized by the Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC) under the auspices of the Government of the Russian Federation and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was held in Moscow on October 12—13, 2016. Official Partner of the Conference is NOVATEK. The event was held ahead of the 20th anniversary of the Arctic Council and was attended by representatives of all its member states, including senior officials from Russia, Norway and Iceland, officials from Denmark and Canada, members of the business community, and leading experts from the Arctic countries.

On 12–13 October 2016, Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC) with support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia holds the Conference titled "International Cooperation in the Arctic: New Challenges and Vectors of Development". The objective of the conference is to determine the outlines of the institutional development of the Arctic Council, the prospects for legal regulation of activities in the Arctic, as well as the potential of economic projects in the region and of cooperation with non-regional players.

RIAC at the Ocean University of China

On July 12-13, 2016, RIAC Program Manager for the Arctic and Asia-Pacific Lyudmila Filippova visited the Ocean University of China, Qingdao. Ms. Filippova read a lecture titled “The Future of the Arctic Region: Reconciling or Walking apart?” The presentation was followed by a discussion of current issues related with Russia-China relations and international cooperation in the Arctic with participation of the university students and faculty.

RIAC at international conference “Ukraine, Syria and the Arctic – From Challenges to Solutions”

On June 13-14, 2016, RIAC Director General Andrey Kortunov, Deputy Director on Science of RAS Institute for Oil and Gas Studies Vassily Bogoyavlensky, RIAC Program Manager Lyudmila Filippova and MGIMO Senior Lecturer Igor Istomin were in Toronto at international conference “Ukraine, Syria and the Arctic – From Challenges to Solutions” sponsored by the Institute for 21st Century Questions, the Global Brief magazine and the Canadian Forces College.
