RIAC at CTR SAIS and DGAP conference "Russia and the West-Building a new Modus Vivendi?"

On March 23 2016 Center for Transatlantic Studies and DGAP (German Council for International Relations) holds a conference "Russia and the West-Building a new Modus Vivendi?". The participants of the conference are well-known experts from the U.S., EU, Russia, discuss the relations in energy and economics, nuclear security, relations of Russia, China and the U.S., European security.

RIAC and CSIS Present a Roadmap for Russia-U.S. Relations in Washington

On March 23, 2017, Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Washington, DC hosted the discussion of joint RIAC–CSIS report “Roadmap for U.S.-Russia relations”, prepared by group of experts from the two countries. The report was presented by Olga Olicker, Senior Adviser and Director, Russia and Eurasia Program, CSIS, Kathleen H. Hicks, Senior Vice President; Henry A. Kissinger Chair; Director, International Security Program, OIeg Stepanov, Director, Foreign Policy Planning Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Sergey Rogov, Scientific Director, Institute of U.S. and Canadian Studies, Russian Academy of Sciences, RIAC member. RIAC was represented by its President Igor Ivanov and Andrey Kortunov, Director General.

Preparation of Russia-U.S. Top-Level Meeting Discussed in the U.S. Department of State

On March 23, 2017, Andrey Kortunov, RIAC Director General met with Kathleen Kavalec, Deputy Assistant Secretary, Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs, and Eric Green, Foreign Service Officer on the Russian desk, at the U.S. Department of State. The parties discussed restoring Russia-U.S. cooperation in various spheres and settling the Syrian and Ukrainian crises as well as preparing Russia-U.S. top-level meeting.

Science Diplomacy and Its Contribution to the International Cooperation in the Arctic Discussed at RIAC

On March 21, 2017 Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC) hosted an expert discussion “Science Diplomacy: US-Russia Cooperation in the Arctic”. Paul Berkman, Coordinator of Arctic Options and Pan-Arctic Options, Professor of Practice in Science Diplomacy of Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, Director of US-Russia Relations Project supported by the Carnegie Corporation, was the keynote speaker of the event. Leading experts on international cooperation in the Arctic took part in the event.

Russia – Japan – U.S.: Current Aspects of Trilateral Relations

On March 15–16, 2017, the Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC) held a roundtable “Russia – Japan – U.S. Trilateral Dialogue”.The roundtable was started with a discussion on the Russia-Japan relations from the perspective of Japan-U.S. interaction and the new U.S. administration. The participants repeatedly noted that President Putin’s visit to Tokyo in December, 2016 and the meeting with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe marked significant progress in Moscow-Tokyo relations, yet some persisting obstacles on the path to the rapprochement remain present.

A Roadmap for U.S.-Russia Relations

The CSIS Russia and Eurasia Program and the Russian International Affairs Council are pleased to present the findings from their forthcoming report, "A Roadmap for U.S.-Russia Relations." This project, undertaken during a period of significant tension and distrust in the bilateral relationship, brought together a bi-national group of experts to develop clear and actionable paths forward for U.S.-Russian cooperation in key areas critical to the security and prosperity of both countries. At this launch event, we will discuss some of the key recommendations of the report in the context of today's still evolving—and still challenging—dynamic.

The Iranian Ambassador Mehdi Sanai: there has never been such a favorable period in the relations between Russia and Iran

On March 14th 2017, the Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC) held a round table at the Media Center of “Rossiya Segodnya” on Russia-Iran relations, aiming at analyzing the present stage and the prospects for a further development. The event was attended by RIAC President and former Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation from 1998 to 2004 Igor Ivanov, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Russia Mehdi Sanai and leading international experts from the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Institute for Iran-Eurasian Studies (IRAS) and the Center for International Studies and Education under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iran (IPIS).

RIAC Discusses Russia’s and Japan’s Approaches to Building Multilateral Cooperation in East Asia

On March 20, 2017, in the framework of the Asian Dialogue, the Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC) held an expert meeting with Yuichi Hosoya, professor of Keio University, Senior Researcher at the Institute for International Policy Studies (IIPS), Senior Fellow at the Tokyo Foundation (TKFD). Participants of the meeting discussed the role of Russia and Japan in multilateral institutions in East Asia and promoting security in the region, traditional and non-traditional security threats and prospects for Russia and Japan joint activities, possible input of Moscow and Tokyo in decreasing tensions in the South China Sea region, Korean Peninsula issue and the prospects for forming a multilateral security system in East Asia.

RIAC experts explained how Russians and Japanese perceive each other

On March 16th, 2017, the Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC) held a second “City-breakfast” from the Urbi et Orbi series at the F.M. Dostoevsky library. The topic of the open lecture was "The image of Russia in Japan and the image of Japan in Russia."
Sergey Agafonov (Editor-in-chief of OGONYOK magazine) and Sergey Chugrov (Professor at the Department of International Journalism of MGIMO under the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Chief Editor of the magazine “Polis. Political Studies” and RIAC expert) explained to the audience how the perception of Russia in Japan, as well as the perception of Japan in Russia, have changed and how one could ensure communication between two states in “one language”.

RIAC at Global Cyberspace Cooperation Summit

On March 14–16, 2017, Berkeley (U.S.A.) hosted VII Global Cyberspace Cooperation Summit organized by East West Institute. Global summit is the Institute's flagship event that has been held in various countries (the U.S.A., India, Germany, Great Britain) since 2010. Pavel Sharikov, RIAC expert, and Maria Smekalova, RIAC website editor, represented RIAC at the event. Maria Smekalova spoke at the "Insights from Young Leaders" plenary panel. RIAC and EWI are working on a joint Russia-U.S. cooperation in cyberspace project.
