Andrey Kortunov met with the Director General of the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis


On March 16, 2017 Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC) hosted a meeting with the representatives of the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), Austria. The parties discussed prospects for cooperation between the analytical centres in various areas. Special attention was given to integration in Eurasia and international cooperation in the Arctic.

London Hosts RIAC-RUSI UK-Russia Security Cooperation Report Presentation


On March 13, London hosted a presentation of a joint RIAC-RUSI (Royal United Services Institute for Defence and Security Studies) draft report, dedicated to the prospects of Russia-UK security cooperation. Prepared by a large group of experts from the two countries through meetings in London (January, 2017) and in Moscow (February, 2017), the report contains the description of main areas of cooperation, including preventing conflict situations between Russia and NATO in Europe, trust building measures, co-ordinating the fight against terrorism, and cooperating in regional crises (Syria, Afghanistan, Libya and others), countering cyberthreats, etc.

Meeting with British Ambassador Laurie Bristow


On March, 10, Laurie Bristow, the UK Ambassador to Russia, visited RIAC. The meeting with RIAC authorities covered the preparation for the visit of Boris Johnson, British Foreign Secretary, to Moscow, prospects and limitations of bilateral cooperation regarding European security, Syrian conflict settlement, civil war in Libya as well as the fight against international terrorism and cyberthreats.

Delegation of the Parliament of Denmark Visited RIAC


On March 10, 2017 Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC) held a meeting with the delegation of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Parliament (Folketing) of the Kingdom of Denmark. Andrey Kortunov, RIAC Director General, Ivan Timofeev, RIAC Director of Programs, and Liudmila Filippova, RIAC Program Manager for the Arctic and Asia Pacific, took part in the event. Danish delegation included Søren Espersen, Chairman of the Foreign Policy Committee of the Danish Parliament, Thomas Winkler, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Denmark to Russia, as well as members of Folketing and officials of the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Ernest Wyciszkiewicz: The EU and NATO are the Cornerstones of Polish Security


On February 2–3, 2017, Russian International Affairs Council in cooperation with the EU Delegation to the Russian Federation held a seminar "The Relationship between the EU, Russia and the US.” Ernest Wyciszkiewicz, Director of the Centre for Polish-Russian Dialogue and Understanding (CPRDiP) shares his views on recent political developments in Poland, the deployment of NATO troops and the expectations of Trump’s policy in Poland.

Beware of What You Wish for: the Unconsidered EU Consensus on Russia

The rift between Brussels and Moscow is deep. The Ukrainian war, the subsequent EU sanctions and Russian counter-sanctions have dragged the bilateral relationship to its lowest point since the collapse of the Soviet Union. Strategic distrust and a clash of perceptions are pervasive. From an EU perspective, the core problem lies in Russia’s relationship with its immediate neighbors to its West. For many in the Kremlin, the EU — although ailing — has become a threatening power expanding to the Russian borders. The very rules of the geopolitical game are in dispute.

Madrid Hosts International Roundtable on Relations between Russia and the West


On March 1, 2017, Madrid hosted an international roundtable devoted to the relations between Russia and the West. The event was organised by the Elcano Royal Institute, one of the leading Spanish "think-tanks" engaged in international relations' analysis. According to the Institute's authorities, Russian studies is a new area of its activity. The Institute is planning to further develop research of Russia and Russia's foreign policy.

Andrey Kortunov Speaks at 14th Congress-Bundestag Forum


On February 19-23, Schloss Elmau (Bavaria) and Berlin hosted 14th annual Congress-Bundestag Forum, organized by Robert Bosch Stiftung and The German Marshall Fund of the United States. The Forum that has been meeting regularly since 2014, is aimed at stimulating dialogue between members of parliaments of the two countries regarding international relations, security issues and globalization. On February 20, Andrey Kortunov, RIAC Director General, spoke about prospects of relations within "Russia - EU -U.S." triangle.

EU–China Cooperation within the “Silk Road Economic Belt” Discussed in Germany


On February 13–14, 2017, a round table “Rethinking Asia: Silk Road Economic Belt — the search for common security interests between the EU and China” was held in Tutzing (Germany). The aim of the event was to discuss the report prepared jointly by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation (Germany) and the SIPRI (Sweden) — “The Silk Road Economic Belt: Considering security implications and EU-China cooperation projects.”

RIAC and High-Level EU Delegation Discuss Fighting Terrorism


7On February 7, Vyacheslav Trubnikov, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary and RIAC member, Andrey Kortunov, RIAC Director General, and RIAC experts Andrey Kazantsev and Ekaterina Stepanova met with EU policymakers and diplomats engaged in cooperation on fighting terrorism. Moscow welcomed Pedro Serrano, Deputy Secretary General for EU Common Security and Defense Policy, Oliver Onidi, Deputy Director General for Security in European Commission, Gilles de Kerchove, EU Counter-Terrorism Coordinator, Jean-Christophe Belliard, Political Director for the EEAS and other EU representatives.
