On January 11, Danish diplomats who arrived on a working visit in Moscow, visited RIAC. The delegation included Steen Norlov, International Trade Policy and Analysis Department, and Kristian Rasmussen, Senior Advisor, European Neighborhood Policy Department. Danish diplomats were informed about Council's activity in European security and cooperation field as well as about the prospects in the Russia-NATO and Russia-EU relations. The parties exchanged their opinions on regional conflicts settlement as well as the possible dynamics of regional and world politics development against the background of the recent political changes in the US and European states.

On December 20, a roundtable "Russia's Development in 2017" was held at the Ambassador's of Germany to Russia residence. The event was attended by the heads of German Embassy's in Moscow key departments (political, economic, media and the head of Military Attaché's Office) as well as group of German Ministry for Foreign Affairs' representatives that came to Moscow. Russia was represented by Andrey Kortunov, RIAC Derector General, Aleksandr Golts, “Ezhednevny Zhournal” ("Daily magazine") editor-in-chief and Natalya Zubarevitch, Independent Institute for social policy regional program's director. The roundtable was hosted by Rüdiger Freiherr von Fritsch-Seerhausen, the Ambassador of Germany to Russia.

On December 19, Andrey Kortunov, RIAC Director General, met with Jean-Claude Knebeler, the Ambassador of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg to the Russian Federation. The Luxembourgian diplomat was informed about the RIAC work on the Russia-EU cooperation issues. The parties discussed the problems of European security, Russia's and the West's mutual perceptions as well as possible areas for cooperation between Russian and Luxembourgian think-tanks.

On December 14 in Berlin Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC) and German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP) held a seminar dedicated to opportunities for Russia-EU energy cooperation. The seminar was opened by Andrey Kortunov, RIAC Director General and Stefan Meister, head of the Program on Eastern Europe, Russia and Central Asia at DGAP.
13 — 14 december 2016
On December 13-14, ECFR (European Council of Foreign Relations) Foreign Policy Strategy Group met in Berlin within the framework of European Council's long-term project "Rethinking Europe". The meeting was organized by Mercator Stiftung, gathering about 30 experts, EU policymakers, diplomats and journalists from Europe and the US. Andrey Kortunov, RIAC Director General, gave a speech.

On December 12, Włodzimierz Marciniak, the Ambassador of Republic of Poland to Russia, visited RIAC. RIAC President Igor Ivanov informed Polish diplomat about the Council’s projects concerning European security and Russia’s cooperation with the EU countries and NATO, as well as about the RIAC’s experience of collaborating with Polish counterparts. The parties discussed the prospects of deepening the collaboration between Russian and Polish think-tanks in the light of approaching of Polish statehood restoration’s centenary (2018). Andrey Kortunov, RIAC Director General, also participated in the meeting.

It was Lord Palmerston, the Victorian-era British Foreign Secretary and Prime Minister, who said that nations had no permanent friends or enemies, only permanent interests. (The same man in 1841 famously dismissed Hong Kong as “a barren rock”.) It is these “permanent interests” which seem to have triumphed in Sino-British relations after a minor hiccup which followed the Brexit referendum in the summer.

On December 7, 2016 Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC) in cooperation with the Robert Bosch Center for Central and Eastern Europe, Russia, and Central Asia at the DGAP, the SAIS Center for Transatlantic Relations at Johns Hopkins University and the Robert Bosch Stiftung held a seminar «Russia and the West-Building a new Modus Vivendi?». The seminar agenda covered the following issues: security relations; economic and energy relations; the challenge of Eastern Europe for Russian-Western relations; new agenda for Western relations with Russia.
