Graduated from the Faculty of Biophysics of Krasnoyarsk State University. Doctor of Sciences (Biology).

Worked at the Kirensky Institute of physics of the Siberian branch (SB) of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS). Head of Laboratory at the Institute of Biophysics (SB of RAS). Director of the Siberian International Center for Ecological Research of Boreal Forests.

Since 1994, heads the Sukachev Institute of Forest (SB of RAS).

On 28 November 2006, was appointed rector of Siberian Federal University.

Russian scientific team leader for the Zotino Tall Tower Observation Facility (ZOTTO).

Chairman of the Siberian Regional Education Methodology Center.

Member of the editorial boards of three international scientific journals (Holocene, Tree-Ring Journal, Eurasian J. Forest Research) and of two Russian journals (Russian Forest Sciences and Siberian ecology journal).

Has authored over 200 scientific publications, including 8 books.

Recipient of state awards and also of prestigious Russian and international science awards.
