Working paper prepared by the Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC) within the project «Middle East: Political Dynamics and Russia’s Interests». The authors examine the main trends in the development of the political and economic situation in Egypt, analyze the state of Russian-Egyptian relations, lead recommendations for their further development, examine the role of Egypt through the prism of the exacerbation of regional conflicts and threats in the Middle East, analyze the prospects for Russian-Egyptian cooperation in addressing regional problems.

The Working Paper had been prepared by RIAC experts before the crash of the Airbus A321 Russian airliner in Sinai, Egypt, on October 31, 2015 that was caused by a terrorist attack. These tragic events have led to a ban on tourist travel to Egypt for Russian citizens, damaged dramatically the Egyptian tourism industry, and cannot but affect the economy as a whole.

However, the materials of the Working Paper contain an analysis of a multifaceted economic cooperation between Russia and Egypt in many areas, and this cooperation, hopefully, will not be affected by the aftermath of the disaster. Egypt continues to remain an important and significant partner of Russia in the Middle East.
